One of the largest projects in which Shickel has had the opportunity to participate was the massive overhaul of Duke University’s West Campus Union. The building was a finalist for the Architects’ Journal’s “Building of the Year” award. The project goal was to tie the new construction that included modern styling and amenities with the original gothic stone architecture. Shickel fabricated and installed many products in this project but some of the exceptional pieces were the blackened panels that acted as a portal between the original building and the new construction. The dark blackened steel was a theme throughout the building and complimented the light wood features. On the exterior, Shickel fabricated and installed polished stainless steel posts, grab rail, guttering, light poles, cladding and mirror finished stainless steel support posts under a poured concrete walkway. In addition to the fabricated metal, we installed glass handrail along the edges of the student walkway.
