The monumental stair at College Park Gateway presented many design and fabrication opportunities. Working with the customer’s design team and our engineers, we were able to utilize a single built-up plate stringer design configured to be supported by tube steel beams cantilevered off the building columns. This design eliminated the need for an additional supporting structure below the stair in order to achieve the floating look the design team envisioned. The tread supports were designed in conjunction with the millwork supplier to provide a stable mounting surface for both the wooden treads and steel plate picket rails and handrail. The blackened finish of this stair is a proprietary process developed and applied by Shickel to achieve the finished aesthetic requested by the customer. The stair was installed in three sections with field welds intentionally left as laid to further complement the blackened finish and desired industrial look of the finished assembly.
